The Atkins diet has been a controversial topic
of discussion for scientists since it was published
by Robert Atkins in a medical journal in 1958.
Low-carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet
have been highly debated in medical circles for
three decades. The medical studies published are
usually contradictory. A long term study published
in the New England Journal of Medicine found
that women on low-carbohydrate diets were healthier
and less at risk of heart disease than women on
high-carbohydrate diets.
The Atkins diet does not impose a food limit and
promotes eating protein until satisfied. In the
Induction Phase carbs are limited to 20g a day so the body will stop craving for high carbohydrate foods. Through stages of the eating plan carbohydrate levels are gradually raised until the
weight-loss goal is reached.
The diet has been proven to raise HDL ("good cholesterol"), reduce inslin resistance and lower triglyceride concentrations. A review paper in The Journal of the American Medical Association compares different types of diets and has reported the Atkins diet leads to 10 more pounds weight loss in 6 months than the Jenny Craig diet.
