Liz Obert project "Dualities" lifts the lid on how mental
illness feels and affects people's lives. Obert contacts
a person with Bipolar disorder or major depressive disorders and
takes two photographs; she calls these portraits
"Dualities". One portrait should express how the subject
feels when depressed and another is how they wish to
be seen by the world. The artist has stated she thinks
there is a general ignorance of what bipolar disorder
is and how it affects people. She mentions the death
of actor Robin Williams in August 2014 as an event
that opened discussions and curiosity about mental
illness to the general public. About 3% of people in the
United States suffer from bipolar disorder and in
30-40% of times there is a risk of self-harm.
Obert got the idea for the art project in 2013, from
her own experience with Bipolar disorder and how
for years she led a dual life, putting on a front during
the day and lying around depressed when she got home.
"Dualities" gives an insight into the daily struggles
of people with Bipolar disorder.
