Rubbish on the city streets of Madrid |
The downfall of the city of Madrid is a recurrent theme of conversation.
Not just because of the numbers, also because it is clearly visible in most
neighbourhoods. The city councils have no money to clear up
the streets appropriately, overlooking personal hygiene and even
basic sanitary conditions. Some of the public parks have been invaded
by overgrown plants and weeds, rubbish bins are overflowing, and no general
maintenance is being carried out.
Basically, there is no way to hide the lack and shortage of money.
It is apparent that the conservative party, "Partido Popular", that has governed the country for a quarter of a century, is at an advantage: centralism.
The capital's sufferings are similar to those of the peripheral regions.
For this reason, the media does not pay particular attention to municipal

of the capital's citizens, more preoccupied with Merkel,
Cataluña, Pujol, risk premium and other large-scale
litigation.
For these reasons, Gallardón (now the Minister of Justice) imposes on the Spaniards new abortion laws and catastrophic projects. However he never holds himself accountable for the disastrous projects he has undergone in Madrid and the chaos he has created. Perhaps his worst and most wasteful project is the move of the City Hall of Madrid.
To cut a long story short, decided to move the City Hall to an old post office
building in Cibeles. The City Hall was previously located in
"La Casa de la Villa", a palace of the XVII century,
apparently not good enough for
the purposes of a City Hall.
The total cost for acquiring this building and transferring
the City Hall was a whopping 466 million euros.
The cost of the renovation of the Tate Modern in London, for instance, was half of that spent on the City Hall of Madrid. And meanwhile this is happening, sadly, rubbish continues to
build up in the streets.
