As her ex-boyfriend Barrie James O'Neill
penned the album, Ultravioence
is
'ultra-good'.
Rolling Stone, who gave the album a fair three
and half
stars, stating in it's August Issue 'Ultraviolence is a melancholy crawl through
doomed romance,
incorrigible addictions,
blown American dreams.'
Here is what we think about the new album.
The title track, Ultraviolence, is a profound love song that hypnotizes
the listeners instantly. Del Rey describes her lover, 'he hit me and it felt like
a kiss', an abusive character. A relationship she wants to save, but
the hopeless tone of her voice and melody are almost a confession that there
is nothing more to salvage from the wreck. 'I loved you the first
time, I love you the last time'; 'Loving you is really hard' cries for
help and statements of closure.
Lana Dey Rey herself has spoken about her previous struggles; a history of alcohol addiction, for which
she was sent to boarding school at the age of 16 but continued to struggle
throughout her twenties.
Her failed relationships and hardship to
become a recognised artist have influenced her mysterious and upbeat
sound accompanied with melancholic, tragic, emotionally charged and somewhat
hopeless lyrics.

The songs in Ultraviolence project to the listener unsolvable situations
which make our hearts bleed- there is a brutally honest reflection on life: it's
a 'Cruel World'.
We want the light to shine in, but in a way, Del Rey
seems to embrace the darkness.
Del Rey toys with sexual power in her song 'Fucked My Way Up to the Top'.
There are some deeply powerful and romantic songs, that almost transport
to another place and era, such as Old Money. The melody is
ghostly reminiscint of a Scottish theme or anthem, only the bagpipes
are missing in the background. The lyrics 'If you call for me/You know I'll
run to you', we see Del Rey clinging onto a 'not-to-be' or dysfunctional
relationship.
Lana Del Rey always delivers beautiful vocals, and her lyrics are
always enchanting and deep. There are definitely hits on this album, another success for Del Rey.
