Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, the 2007 crime drama directed
by Sidney Lumet, and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan
Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney.
Hoffman plays Andy, a ruthless schemer who manipulates his brother (Hawke)
into robbing their parents jewellery store.
Hank's friend Bobby is enlisted
to carry out the robbery, which goes awry when Andy and Hank's mother
is shot into a comma and subsequently dies.
Andy needs the money from the jewellery store to flee to Mexico. He is
facing an upcoming audit that will reveal him having embezzled from his
employer to support his drug habit.
This was the last film of Sydney Lumet, the legendary director of
"12 Angry Men" starring Peter Fonda.
Hoffman's role as a drug addict in "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is not such
a far role from his real life; he struggled with drugs at University,
and entered a rehabilitation program at the age of 22. After this he stayed sober for 23 years, relapsing during a wrap party
for the film the Master.
He began to use heroin in 2013; he was found dead from a cocktail of drugs and
discovered with a syringe hanging from his arm on the 2nd of February 2014, at 46 years of age.
Hoffman, who was able to portray both lovable and evil characters, will be remembered for his authentic
performances in Boogie Nights (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), Almost Famous (2000),
Capote (2005) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, Doubt (2008) and
The Master (2012), for which he also received Oscar nominations.
